The Mainland is a 92-page photo and journal-entry book by Hawaii-based photographer Lila Lee capturing her views and experiences as she traverses the USA on a 2-month photo exhibition tour. Lee’s feely-filmy-vision of life on the road comes from a unique perspective—that of someone born and raised on a far-away island (Oahu) as they first encounter the vast distances and uncanny strangeness of the continental United States.

Lee, who graduated from the Art Center School of Design, has a documentary style that is casual and charmed. It’s not just the wrecked truck stops and tube-lit Waffle Houses Lila embraces, The Mainland is really about finding friends and community scattered across country, how connections, chance and discovery happen when putting oneself into the flow of the highway---rolling with a Contax, some color neg film, and eyes hungry for new views. Shot during a Tri-X-Noise photo tour with Bill Daniel in 2014. Photographed, written and edited by Lila Lee. www.lilalee.net
